Beneath Libertas, the skull of an American bison, painted with the Lakota Sioux Medicine Wheel, pays tribute to the native people of South Dakota – the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota. This symbol, representing hope and healing, is coupled with the sacred significance of the bison, an animal revered for its life-giving contributions. Resting on a cluster of freesia flowers, symbols of peace, friendship, and innocence, these elements weave a tapestry of South Dakota’s diverse cultural tapestry.
