Introducing Laurea, the embodiment of Honor, who graces the South Dakota 25 Goldback Denomination with a tale steeped in love and fidelity. Drawing inspiration from the legends of Maiden’s Isle on Lake Kampeska, one of South Dakota’s enchanting glacial lakes, this illustration narrates the story of Minnecotah, a young woman of unwavering devotion to her distant lover.

Minnecotah, sought after by many local suitors, devised a contest of throwing stones into the lake, promising her hand to the one who could throw the farthest. As the days unfolded, an island formed, and Minnecotah’s ruse was uncovered. In a twist of fate, she found herself stranded on the emerging island, faced with a choice between starvation and surrendering to a suitor. True to her love and honor, she chose neither, sustained by a white pelican that brought her sustenance until her lover’s return.

Laurea is depicted standing on a stone island, symbolizing Maiden’s Isle, with a pelican soaring above and raspberries adorning the foreground. The illustration is enriched with elements from Lakota legends, including the origin of the flute, the porcupine’s quills, and the dream catcher, as recounted by the Aktá Lakota Museum & Cultural Center. With the inscription “Honor to the Giver”, Laurea invites viewers to uphold their commitments, honor their word, and offer praise through trials and tribulations.
