The 50 State Quarters™ Program, launched in 1999, was a groundbreaking initiative that spanned 10 years and celebrated the nation's states in the order of their ratification or admission into the Union. Each quarter was produced for only about 10 weeks, never to be produced again, making each state's design a unique and valuable piece of history. The reverse of each quarter showcases the state's unique design while the obverse displays George Washington's familiar image. To accommodate state designs on the reverse, the words "United States of America," "Quarter Dollar," "Liberty," and "In God We Trust" all appear on the obverse.

But that's not all - the D.C. and U.S. Territories Quarters were also minted and issued in 2009 to honor six quarter-dollar coins. These coins were issued in equal sequential intervals in 2009 in the order of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the District of Columbia. These coins are issued for circulation in quantities to meet the needs of the United States, both for commerce and for collectors, and the Secretary has the authority to mint and issue uncirculated and proof coins, as well as a 90 percent silver version of each coin.
