Counter Tokens, or jetons/ jettons as they were also known by, have been used all throughout Europe from the 13th through the 17th century. They were produced as counters for use in calculation on a lined board simliar to an abacus. They were used for counting anything from farm animals to crates on a ship. Thousand of different jetons exist, mostly of religious and educational designs, as well as portraits, these mainly resembling coinage.
