Devonian - Late Cretaceous (400 - 68 million years ago) after KT Extinction
Ammonoids, members of the Cephalopoda class of marine life, are closer in relation to other members like octopus, squid and cuttlefish, than they are to the similarly shaped nautilus that inhabits our oceans today.
Likely to have been met with extinction due in part to the severe change in temperature and their reproduction strategy of batches of eggs. The atmospheric changes of the resulting meteoric impact would affect the young quite dramatically.
Often thought of as petrified snakes, and called "snakestones" or "serpentstones", they have had a role in ancient days. Merchants used to carve into or apply a snake head to the open end of the ammonoid and retail them as petrified, coiled snakes. In Nepal, when found within the Gndaki River, are known as saligrams, believed by the Hindu as concrete manifestations of Vishnu.( "Fossils: myths, mystery, and magic". The Independent.
