As a way to commemorate the 400th anniversary of  the Discovery of America and "to tell the story of the world's progress through those four centuries." The expo took place on 700 acres of land on the shore of Lake Michigan, mainly Jackson Park in Chicago, Illinois. Over 27,500,000 attended the event which opened on May 1, 1893 and closed on November 2, 1893. ("So-Called Dollars" 33)
