The first Confederate State currency was released in April 1861. Their provisional government was only two months old at the time with the Civil War starting the same month. The US Congress, on the near brink of bankruptcy and pressed to financially back the Civil War, authorized the United States Treasury to issue paper money. Due to the scarcity of metal the Confederacy never issued coins, instead released different paper notes between 1861 and 1865.
