The 2003 United States Statehood Quarters represent a unique moment in the U.S. Mint's history. As part of the larger 50 State Quarters Program running from 1999 to 2008, these coins were designed to honor the individual histories and unique qualities of each state. In 2003, the program highlighted the states of Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas. Each quarter was minted with a unique design on the reverse side, symbolizing important aspects of each state's history and identity. This year's designs included depictions of two famous individuals. Abraham Lincoln and Helen Keller were honored on the Illinois and Alabama State Quarters.
